(More customer reviews)Compared to the kit lens, I was surprised at how much sharper and detailed the images are from this prime lens. The build quality is comparable to the kit lens, all plastic, which does make it very light which is a plus. I noticed the focus motor is also a little smoother and quieter as well. Keep in mind that at the maximum aperture the depth of field is extremely narrow. This requires critical focus accuracy which the A55 seems to accomplish effortlessly even in low light.
This lens seems like a great bargain based on my results vs. cost.

(More customer reviews)When I bought my Sony DCRPC-109 MiniDv about 4 years ago, I was very pleased with the product in most ways except for one: you needed to use the actual camera to charge your battery on a loading dock.
Now for someone who was planning on using the camera extensively, I knew this was going to be a problem. So when I purchased a couple of back-up F-series batteries, I also bought this charger from Sony.
The thing has worked perfectly for about 4 years now. With multiple batteries, I charge one with the camera and the other using this charger. So I always have a fully charged battery ready for use.
If you are like me and tend to wear the battery out quickly, then it is worth the investment to get this high-quality charger along with an extra battery for your MiniDv camcorder.

(More customer reviews)I travel a great deal and have a drawer full of noise canceling headphones by Panasonic, Kensington, JVC and Sony. Each had limitations -- not enough high end, poor construction, poor noise reduction, or in the case of lesser Sony's I bought several months ago, pretty good sound, but rather inadequate ear cups and poor portability (they wouldn't fold up to occupy as little as possible space in my briefcase.)Always worried about losing or damaging something while traveling I did not go for the full kahuna and buy Bose.
So, having seen these around some local shops and taken a listen I bought the NC40 and immediately took them on a trip.
By and large they are fine. When turned on (don't even try to listen to them when off) the sound is rich and clean; lovely base and good high end, which is important to my tired ole ears. Plenty of mid-range. Nice volume. I'm not sure they are world beaters in terms of overall noise reduction, but they certainly take the edge off and from my same old seat near the rear of a Southwest jet, they provide a relaxing and easy to take listening experience. One WANTS to use this extremely comfortable headset, whether noise reduction is needed or not. I hear things I didn't know my MP3 decoder put in a file. Oh, I listen mainly to jazz and classical music.
Oh yes, they fold up neatly and I like the on-off switch/battery holder, which lives by itself on the connecting line and has an override button that works beautifully.

(More customer reviews)I ordered my MPKPHA case from bluemoutain through amazon.com after another company dropped the ball on my order and time was running out before my trip. Bluemoutain came though with great service and a better than expected price.
This case worked very well with my Sony P 10 camera. I used it down to 90 feet and made up to 4 dives a day. The camera case was soaked and opened each time without any additional maintainace on this trip. It was easy to use and the pictures were great. The Strobe and the macro feature did most of what I needed and about $1000 less than other brands. If you use a red filter make sure you understand what you are doing and your lighting. This case and the matching filter worked great.

(More customer reviews)I have some really good headphones and earphones. I own Ultimate Ears super-fi 5's and Grado SR80's. I don't know if that makes me an audiophile or not, but I *do* know what good ear/head phones sound like. These sound pretty good for the money. I use them when I work around the house or ride my bike. The UE's are too isolating and the Grado's too bulky to use other than lying down or sitting down. So, these are good to wear when active. They fit in my ear nicely and have a pretty even sound. Might be thin in the bass end of things for you, but I find they are more or less accurate with a bias toward the high end of things. They're good enough to let me know that Metallica's "Death Magnetic" has very bad sound quality. Devin Townsend sounds crisp if a bit thin in them. They have pretty good details for little earphones that cost under $20.
As another review notes, they are not "silent," "retractable" or "behind the neck." I have no idea why the product description says that. But, they are fine little 'phones for the money.

Mavica FD92 Digital Camera Review

(More customer reviews)I just got this camera. In doing my research I found that this is a very similar camera to the MVC-FD90 camera. This one is the 2001 model while the other is the 2000 model. There are some differences, which I'll mention, but in general, I think this is a great camera for the price.
The reason I got this camera is because I needed the versatility of a digital camera with a removable medium (the disks) because over a long vacation memory sticks will fill up, and unless you have either a laptop to download your pictures to, or a lot of extra money lying around to purchase large mega byte memory sticks, this is the way to go.
The nice thing about this camera is that is will use either disks or a memory stick. You don't have to buy the memory stick adaptor like with the other Mavicas, it's built into the camera - so you have the best of both worlds.
This camera will shoot up to 1.6 mega pixels. This is ample for what I use the camera for, which is e-mailing, looking at the pictures on the computer, or printing out 5 X 7 pictures for a scrapbook. Yes, the more mega pixels the larger the picture you can print with no distortion, but you will also pay more for the camera and then have to buy a larger memory stick as most stick cameras come with only an 8 meg card, which starts to add up.
The FD92 does the movies and that is extremely cool. I use it all the time and I cannot express how neat it is. It will shoot 15 - 60 second movies depending on the quality you want. These are perfect for e-mailing. It's like having a moving memory to look at without having to watch hours of wasted videotape. If you've watched someone else's home movies, you know what I mean.
The big difference I know of between this camera and the FD-90 is that the FD-90 has a manual focus function where this one does not. I don't consider it a loss. The manual focus really is only useful when shooting for a very specific effect in a shot. If you're looking for that much ability in a camera, you're probably already considering a professional level camera, which, again, is much costlier. The FD-90 is also more expensive than this camera. So, for less money you're getting a newer camera with this year's technology minus a feature will probably never use.
All I can say is that, like many Mavica owners before me, I love this camera. It allows me to do everything I want to do, and it wasn't a killer in cost. If you're considering the the FD-90, I'd recommend this one instead.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this product about a month ago, and the card reader is small, lightweight, and pleasantly designed with a brushed aluminum top. However, I recently obtained an 8GB SDHC card that this cardreader could not detect. It is very difficult to find information regarding SDHC compatibility for this device, and reviews for a (nearly) identical product released in Europe claim SDHC compatibility. I eventually stopped by a local store to pick up another cardreader which was able to read the SDHC card. Unless I got a defective Sony 17-in-1 cardreader, this device does NOT read SDHC cards.

However be careful which package you choose, I would suggest taking the standard Sony Lenz Package PLUS the Sony 55 -200 lens option. In addition also consider the Sony Alpha 580, and there is the next "Sony Alpha SLTA MP RANGE with Translucent Mirror Technology" Which is also excellent, but all this depends on your budget.

Sony SAL70400G 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM Lens Review

(More customer reviews)I have been using this lens for the past three weeks. Mostly to shoot local league Rugby, Soccer, and Baseball. Let me say up front, if you do not have a monopod get one now. The total weight of a A700 and this lens is about 4.5 pounds. If you include the A700 grip you are lugging around about 6 pounds of gear. For the images you get its is well worth it the weight. For the bang for the buck this has got to be the best Sony lens out there. With the 1.5x crop factor on most of the Sony DLSR's (only the A900 is full frame) this becomes an effective 105-600mm zoom. It's used mostly at the 400mm (equivalent) setting and my shots are tack sharp even wide open. Since I use this mostly for sports I keep the camera is in shutter priority setting, usually at 1/1000 or 1/800 of a second. Focusing seems a bit faster with the built in SSM as opposed to the screw drive on the other lenses but not much different. Because the SSM uses a bit of battery power you will experience fewer shots per charge. The only negative about this lens is that when zoomed the lens does extend quite a bit. I had hoped that it's length remained the same throughout the zoom range as my Tamron 70-200 F2.8 does. But this is a small quibble when you factor in the image resolution and very fair price for a premium lens. Another plus, the silver finish really looks great. It really stands out nicely when I'm in the press box with the Canikon crowd.

(More customer reviews)This camera is fantastic. I got it about 2 months ago and it has been invaluable. I will never take a picture with film again! The quality of the pictures is absolutely amazing!! '[m not an photography expert, so I wanted something that was easy to use but did not want to sacrifice quality and this is it! The batteries last much longer then other digital cameras I have used. Of course the memory stick is very small, but that it typical for all digital cameras. You will need an extra one, and b/c this is 5 megapixels the memory stick will hold less pictures that images taken at 4 megapixels or less. And the great thing about this is if you need extra batteries you can buy any rechargable batteries and use that! No expensive extra ... batteries here! The size is nice and small so it fits in my tiny purse. I've tried other cameras that were so small they looked so fragile. Not this! I have no complaints at all about this camera!! To download the pictures you just plug the USB into your computer and you can pull them off without even downloading software to your computer.

(More customer reviews)This compact charger for specific cameras in Sony's Cybershot line is compact, sturdy, and does a great job quickly charging Sony D, E, R, and T series lithium ion batteries. With its retractable (or "fold-out") rear plugs, it transports easily, there's no cord to store. (Some versions of this charger do have a cord instead of fold-out plugs).
But due to its popularity, a flood of counterfeit versions are appearing online (especially on ebay). Unfortunately some of these are now finding their way onto Amazon as well. They are poorly built, cheap imitations that pose a risk of battery damage and even fire. So how do you tell the difference? How do you make sure you're not getting a fake?
Here's how: On the bottom edge of the back of every genuine Sony BC-CS3 charger, you will find a series of etched identification numbers, usually 8-digits, inside a small rectangular box. (See the closeup photo I've added above, the numbers are clearly visible). Knockoff or fake chargers will not have these numbers, as they are difficult to duplicate. If you are buying a charger from somebody online, ask them to check for these numbers, or to email you a photo.
So, just look for the etched ID numbers, then you'll know you've got a genuine Sony product.

You get extremely crystal-clear audio fidelity with the option of switching to a wider sound range. The only beef I have is with it's size... If you like to carry your HC-3 alot (which I do) the camera becomes much less compact (you'll notice how far it sticks up)... I suppose this is a testament to the HC-3's minute size and portability. But for stand-alone applications (such as recording a live band on a tripod, still nature settings, etc) this is the mic to beat. And with the fuzzy wind-protector and carrying pouch included, theres no reason not to pick up this mic. For serious stereo-sound recording applications, The Sony ECMHST1 Stereo Microphone is worth your time and money.

My main reservation is that it uses a belt loop instead of a belt clip. The loop is narrow (1 1/2 inch wide belts, max) and it seems a bit flimsy...like the stitching could tear on it fairly easily. Other than that, I like it. I also bought the Sony LCS-CST General Purpose Soft Carrying Case for Slim Cybershot Digital Cameras which is a great case if you don't mind its larger profile.

(More customer reviews)I was a little doubtful about using a mirrored lens. My doubts were misplaced. The lens, for nature shots is very good. I get some tremendous shots with the subject matter almost full frame! The f/8 aperture, I was a little concerned when it came to speed but that also proofed to misplaced I've been able to shoot at medium and high speeds 250th to 1,000th. The auto focus is fast, although because of the mirror, in tight spots, has a tendency to hunt so I've selected the the tightest auto focus setting possible. It's reduced the situation but not eliminated it. The lens is light enough for the reduced vibration of the Sony Alpha, it doesn't exceed the limitation thus I really don't need a tripod which is a big plus in bird photography.

(More customer reviews)I don't know how this hasn't been reviewed yet - this is simply the "prosumer" camcorder to have. After reading up on this camera, the Canons (GL2, XL1s), and the "Panny" (aka, the DVX100a), it seems this manages to, put simply:
- Beat the GL2
- Tie with the XL1s
- Beat the DVX100a
To go more in depth, let's start with the GL2. While this is one heck of an affordable, broadcast-quality machine, it mainly loses to the VX2100 in terms of low-light conditions. This is really where the Sony shines - low-light shooting. A popular breakdown of the VX2100 vs. the GL2 is that the VX2100 works better in low light, and the GL2 has a more powerful zoom. That pretty much is what it comes down to. The GL2 has a "frame mode," in which you get 30 frames/second non-interlaced video. The idea behind this is to equate to the popular, on-demand 24p, to get that "film look." Such a look is only important if you plan on doing actual movies, and unfortunately, the GL2's frame mode simply isn't that great. Aside from that, when you later edit your shots, there's tons of programs and plug-ins which will do the same thing - but better.
Now, the XL1s. I know I've used the word "simply" a lot in this review, and that's primarily because I want to make the comparisons simple. When one goes to taste a Coke and a Pepsi, it would be useless to make a pro and con list to decide which tastes better... to you. Instead, you just pick the one you like, and continue drinking - and you probably wouldn't mind the other brand next time (ok, maybe not all of you). Anyways, the point being all of these cameras will give you an excellent picture, and they'll all do a bunch of extra things. If you're a serious, professional videographer, then it is recommended you compare long specifications lists to see which better meet your needs. On the other hand, if you're like me and just want something that will shoot family and non-planned out footage, these will all do great. And when you go to shoot a movie, wedding, documentary or whatever it is you're doing professionally, these cameras will continue to impress you.
Ok, about that XL1s. This camera has been used in movies - 28 Days Later, TV shows - pretty much the entire MTV line-up, commercials - that Jerry Seinfeld American Express one, etc. Needless to say, this is a very impressive camera. Not only is it significantly larger than the others, but its most sought after feature is the fact that the lenses are interchangeable. What's not frequently mentioned is the fact that these lenses cost upwards of $600/pop. Of course, the XL1s has some more professional features to justify the price jump from the GL2 - those of which you can read about on those spec sheets I mentioned earlier.
And finally, onto the "Panny," or the Panasonic DVX100a. This camera has a whole several-thousand member online discussion forum for it. That should tell you how much people love this camcorder. I think it's nice, myself. Don't know how much I love it. I know what everyone loves about it is the fact that it does 24p perfectly - that's the aforementioned "film effect" feature. The problem is, when you compare its other features to the VX2100, the Sony is the better camcorder. And don't forget you can still get a "film effect" when you go to edit your video.
So, all in all, these are the camcorders which are all in somewhat of a similar price range. I know I've considered all four of these, which is why I wanted to share what I found for that other guy who wants to know the same thing. You probably still want to check out some other places for reviews, which is highly recommended. Like I said, I spent 4 weeks doing what you're doing now, and I ended up with the VX2100. Take that for what it's worth.

Ability to customize own webpage on the camera (but also a con because no information on how to get camera info into your own webpage)
Cons
This thing is HUGE. It's about 4x the size of my Toshiba IK-WB21A.
Does not come with a power supply. Luckily I had a 24 volt transformer on hand, so I was able to fire the thing up. You can use either 24V AC or 12V DC.
The IP setup utility was very buggy. Kept saying that it lost connection when I told it to reboot, so had a hard time rebooting the camera with the new IP address. Once set, web based setup went smoothly.
Can't change the default power-up position. Also can't limit pan/tilt range.
No captions for FTPed images.
Documentation is pretty lame. No information on how to get camera image or pan/tilt control outside of the built in webserver. Also having trouble googling info on this camera.

I got this camcorder few days before, and now using it daily almost 5 hours in day. I have listed out some of the Advantasges and problems i face with this new avtar of sony lineup.
1. The quailty of the recorded is very good and i feel happy when i shoot videos inside the house in low light, the lense did a good job.
2 Nightshot feature is also impressive and i have shoot some videos in total darkness and quailty is really good.
3. The battery that comes with the Kit is seems to be OK , if you are not planning to use the LCD while recording. You can also choose the battery with the higher life time.
4. The most welcome feature is the USB straeming of your data by connecting to ur PC. i have brodcast my movie using the yahoo messanger webcam feature and its done very well.
Well now i m sorry to say but this machine has some inbuilt problmes like.
1. If you are planning to capture the recorded video on your computer using the USB and the supplied software named PIXELA, u will be disappointed with the quailty as it was very very bad.
2. The built in light does not seem to have an great extent while working on the low lights.
3. The external Microphone Input is not provided and u have depend on the inbuilt mic.
In last, if you are a new comer and ur requirments are not like gorge lucas , u can easily go for this low budget handycam and enjoy the pleasure of movie making.

For the quick and dirty review on this stereo, here's my thoughts. It's pricey, but it's an awesome unit. Satellite radio works great, and the navigation works great. I used to be a Garmin user but recently switched to TomTom because I've found the maps to be more up-to-date and I like the IQ Route feature (see below). I still have an old Garmin though and I get plenty of use out of it. The screen does tilt to allow for better viewing, I love that, and the removable navigation module is pure genius. However, one big thing that I absolutely do not like is that the navigation module only comes with the maps of the US and Canada, and you CAN'T buy and add European maps to it. This is a problem for me as I ship my car overseas. See below for the workaround if this is an issue for you. TomTom also only gives you 12 months of map updates, which is a bad call. Being that this is one of their flagship GPS units, it should be a lifetime update like they offer on some of their other models. There are a lot of additional costs associated with this stereo depending on what accessories you want to add to it: satellite radio/HD radio/rear view camera/steering wheel control. The rear view camera option is GREAT, but they don't even advertise that unless you dig deep into the manual.
Also, they are not clear at all in the manual about what you need to buy in order to add the optional features, so I've included the part numbers in the review below. If a remote control is important to you, I think the button layout they've chosen is terrible.
Overall, it's an excellent, solid stereo, with great navigation, but shame on Sony and TomTom for not giving lifetime map updates or the ability to add new maps. I honestly think that the better deal is the 660 model, which costs hundreds less and is only different in 2 ways... The screen is just a little bit smaller, but it's because they've included a volume control KNOB that is much easer to use than the volume control BUTTONS on the 770. Other than that, the two units are identical. For me this stereo is 4 stars, but I would imagine that for most folks it'd be a solid 5. You'll be happy with it even though it does have a few shortcomings on the GPS side.

Touch Screen Interface/Menu:
The interface is very simple and user friendly. When you bring up the interface you can choose from Navigation, AV Source, and BT Phone (bluetooth). If you get busy and don't touch anything on the screen, the menu will go back to what you were previously looking at. There are 6 radio station preset buttons. If you want, you can choose to show navigation AND your A/V source on the screen at the same time (very cool), and can even choose where the additional window will appear on the display. Lastly, you can adjust the angle of the screen so you're not always have to touch it at a 90-degree angle; this feature is really nice. It also has day/night/auto settings.
Remote control:
The remote control is small and nice, but what I do not like about it is the location of the volume control. If you're holding it in your right hand, the volume control buttons are on the bottom right of the remote. Essentially, they are in the absolute worst place possible for being able to hit them easily while holding the remote with one hand. Whoever designed the button layout simply did not have a brain. However, I imagine that not many people will use the remote, so it's probably not a big deal for most folks.
SenseMe:
With this feature you can tell the stereo how you're driving, i.e. Chill out, freeway, etc, and it will choose songs for your mood. In order to use this feature, you'll need to get your USB Device (iPod or whatever) and then plug it into your home computer and set it up with some software. After that, you'll be good-to-go. It works pretty well and more than anything, it's just fun to do; I love it.
DVD player:
It works great, but a DVD player in the front seat? I can't see that as something I'd ever use, and here's why... Sure, it's nice to have a DVD player in the car, but I know in nearly every state, it's illegal for the driver to have a video display device operating and in view while driving. I know most installers will not setup the DVD player in the front seats to operate while the vehicle is in motion, so just know the law in your state and take care. I suppose you could make some sort of "blind" so your front seat passenger could watch a DVD while you can't see it, that would work...
Volume Control:
It's nice to see that Sony offers this stereo with either the volume control KNOB or the volume control BUTTONS. The most used feature of a radio is without-a-doubt, the volume control, and on this model (the 770), the volume control is 2 small buttons side-by-side on the bottom left of the face. On the 660 model, the volume control is the circular knob on the left side of the face. Although the 7" face is more sleek looking than the 6.1" face, you give up a lot when it comes to functionality in my opinion. It's just so much easier and faster to be able to turn the knob on the 660 than to push the 2 buttons on the more expensive 770 model. It's also much easier and faster to use the knob when you're not looking at the stereo and want to keep your eyes on the road. Make your own decision here, but just realize, if you want the more functional knob on the 660, you also get to pay a good bit less; it's a double bonus. Also, the difference in screen size may sound like a lot (7" vs. 6.1"), but it's not that noticeable. FYI, the screen is measured diagonally.
iPod/USB/iPhone:
It's specifically made for the iPod and iPhone and you can connect your iPod (or another USB Device) by an optional USB cable and control it through the receiver, and you can also connect your iPhone via Bluetooth. You can connect other bluetooth-enabled phones, but depending on the phone, you may have limited functionality.
GPS:
One feature I LOVE on the TomTom is that it does IQ Routes. It calculates the most efficient path of travel depending on the time of day and on traffic, because the shortest route is not always the fastest. TomTom has had this feature for a while so most of the bugs have been worked out of it. This is a feature that you can't find on a Garmin, and it works really well. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE the lane assist feature. No more wondering what the upcoming freeway junction is going to look like and having to do a quick lane change at the last second. One thing that we all know is that sometimes, map data is wrong. Well, TomTom now lets you do something about that. There's a feature that lets you correct it now and even upload the correction to the TomTom community. You can also get map corrections from other users when you connect the navigation module to your home computer. It's very cool, and is an awesome feature. There's even a feature that lets you add the locations of speed cameras into your navigation unit, and then you can even report the location of the camera to the Tomtom community of users.
The GPS view is very clean and can show a 3D view or a top-down view. The 3 touch screen buttons on the bottom of the screen show speed, volume, and route info/time. On the TomTom you can navigate to a point on a map, whereas on a GPS like the Garmin, you need to have an address; this is a nice feature to have. Also, you can modify the GPS display that is shown when you're driving; another GREAT feature.
The Navigation Module/GPS Map Data:
The navigation module is about the size of a cell phone and holds all the map data for the GPS. It can be disconnected from a housing unit and brought into your house so you can connect it to your home computer to update maps, load destinations, trips, etc... It connects to the car stereo via a housing unit that most folks will store in either the glove compartment or another easily-accessed compartment. You are given the maps for the U.S. and Canada. Unfortunately, you are only given 12 months of map updates, which, considering the cost of this stereo, is simply absurd. TomTom offers lifetime map updates on some of their other GPS products, so I have no idea why they didn't do that here. Also, if you want to add other maps, like Europe, TomTom DOES NOT allow you to do that. This could be a big problem for folks like State Dept employees, or Military Personnel who ship their vehicles overseas. There is a difficult workaround though... When you get to your destination in Europe, call the Sony support number for the country you're in and buy the European Navigation Module, then just swap it out with your U.S. Navigation Module. It's a terrible way to have to do it, but it's the only way I've found to make it work. TomTom customer support told me that they had received numerous calls about this issue so hopefully they'll change this. In the meantime, this may help you if you're one of the few in this situation:
When you call Sony Europe, you'll need to give them the European model number for your stereo, which is XNV-L770BT (all they did was add the L)
For your information, the part #'s for the different navigation modules are below. Also, Sony USA can not send you the modules for Europe; you must call Sony Europe.

(More customer reviews)Several people complained on various internet review boards about how this camera does not deliver very high quality video, etc. I'm a technology enthusiast, computer specialist, amateur photographer and have about 7 or 8 different cameras - so I feel qualified to give a good review.
This is a camcorder meant for internet uploads/sharing, quick shots, etc. This is not what you want to film your wedding with. So don't expect broadcast quality.
Having said that I think the image quality is VERY good for its size. One huge advantage over Flip/etc... is the swiveling lens. This was the main attraction for me. I'm always embarassed waving a big camera in public. Just don't like when people stare at me for filming something. This is why Sony bloggie is a great product. You can turn the lens to an angle you like and hold the device like your cellphone. People will actually think you are just playing with your phone.
Let's get done with my complaints list quickly:
-CMOS sensor - means you get the rolling shutter a.k.a jello effect when panning too fast with the camera (vertical objects appear skewed)
-Smaller lens angle when using 1080p mode. (i.e. picture is too "tele")... you get a nicer wide angle if using 720p.
That's about it, image quality -especially in daylight- is very very good for such a camera. I actually prefer to record in 720p 60fps mode, the high frame rate gives it a very smooth motion.
FYI, it's compatible with Apple's iMovie. Will take some time to import your videos but once it's done, editing is super easy!
I hesitated for a long time before buying this camera but I'm glad to say I don't regret it at all! Very satisfied with my purchase.

(More customer reviews)This Sony camera is a nice addition to the Sony Line-up, somewhat of a replacement for the HVR-V1u, only shooting tapeless to MemoryStick and SD cards instead of tape. It was released around March of 2010, and competes mostly with the Panasonic HMC-150 which has similar features. Here are the pros as I see it:
* Wider angled lens than many other cameras, which is nice for interiors, and filmmaking. But not much wider than the HMC-150.
* 20x zoom, which is very nice to have. Only the Canons equal this. Sony's digital zoom is also quite good in a pinch.
* Very fine quality LCD screen. You can argue about the placement.
* Camera will shoot 1080, but also 480, if you want to shoot standard definition like the "old days".
Here are some cons:
* Camera will not shoot 720p, and will not overcrank (no slow motion).
* AVCHD footage may not play nice with Final Cut Pro or some software, yielding large file sizes that may need converting.
* Low light performance of 1.5lux is a bit of hype. The camera performs about as well as all the others in low light in this class.
* Arguably overpriced, especially with the onslaught of incredible footage seen from DSLR cameras.
* On board microphone is useless.
Some other things to consider: Camera has CMOS chips, which are eventually going to be all that is made. This may be prone to some rolling shutter issues or vibration issues. I'll let you research this on your own. But CMOS does use less power than CCD chips. Chips are only 1/3", which will soon be a thing of the past.
Bottom line - If you are a Sony user and have been waiting for a camera that shoots to SD cards in this price range, this will do it, and all you need. It would be very handy for events, sports, interviews, documentaries and some indie filmmaking. It doesn't have the interchangeable lenses that the Z5u or EX-3 have, but it's less expensive than those, and unlike the V1u, it is tapeless, and is probably a stop better in low light than the V1u. If you can live without the overcranking and have a good XLR microhone already, this may be the camera for you.

(More customer reviews)I got this flash for my Sony DSCW1 camera because the one criticism of this camera was that the built-in flash was weak and had a limited range of about 10-12 feet.
This external flash certainly does work to augment the flash capabilites of the DSCW1. In my tests, it appears to be effective outdoors at night at distances of up to about 50-60 feet.
The HVLFSL1B is NOT controlled directly by the camera - there are no electrical connections whatsoever. Instead, there is a light sensor on the HVLFSL1B which senses the light of the DSCW1's built in flash and this triggers the HVLFSL1B.
And so, in fact, this External Slave Flash will work for practically any camera, whether they have a hotshoe or not, as long as they have a built-in flash (the DSCW1 does not have a hotshoe - the mounting bracket of the HVLFSL1B is attached to the tripod screwhole of the DSCW1).
Furthermore, one does not even have to mount the HVLFSL1B to a camera, or even have it pointing in the same direction as the camera. It is possible to use the HVLFSL1B as a bounce flash, pointing it at a side wall or the ceiling. As long as the flash of your camera reflects off whatever the HVLFSL1B is pointed at, it will fire.
So this is great! At last, a bounce flash that will work for practically any point and shoot camera that has a built in flash!
The only downside of the HVLFSL1B is that instead of regular AA batteries, it uses these non-rechargable lithium CR123 batteries (the same battery used in many point and shoot 35mm film cameras). ARGH! Anyway, that's why I took off one star.

However, if you are somebody like me who had limited funds to spend but wanted all the everyday features a ... person would want, then this is the camera to buy! All the basics are included (still photo shots, fantastic zoom abilities, picture stabilization, ability to film in complete darkness and amateur picture manipulation capabilities).
It also hooks up to a PC using a fire wire cable (IEEE1394) and a video capture board, which I recommend buying the StudioDV from Pinnacle Systems that includes both for ... then getting sucked for ... by purchasing Sony's brand. Also I found the Laser Link feature to be the best features, allowing me to play back my tapes on the TV without having to hook up the camera to it every time.
Overall, the DCR-TRV130 is a great camera for what you're going to spend on it.

(More customer reviews)I bought this camera as a replacement for a VHS-C camera that I never did manage to use because it was just too cumbersome. The HandyCam SR45 is certainly small -- it fits in my purse! But it does have a few flaws I wish I had realized before purchasing.
First of all, it doesn't have a wide-angle lens. That is an optional accessory. This limits my filmmaking abilities more than I realized it would. Secondly, it dosn't have a viewfinder. You are forced to use the viewscreen at all times. In bright sun you can't see the image on the viewscreen at all, so without the option of switching to the viewfinder it's hit and miss if you are filming what you think you are filming.
And the last major challenge I have is that it records in MPEG2 format. This is the format (I guess) that you need to output directly to DVD. But for editing, this is not the best format. To edit in Windows Movie Maker you have to convert the file types and the quality tanks. I am looking at some MPEG2 editors right now, but I hear that editing right in MPEG2 format you lose some ability to make fine-tune edits.
On the plus side, I never have to buy tapes for this thing, and with something like 6 hours of recording built in at the highest quality I doubt I'll even need to buy memory cards for it. (Even on a great vacation, over 6 hours of footage is too much! Edit yourself!!) No running out of room in the middle of something exciting happening.
The lens cap is built in, which is also great, but I'm forgetting to close it all the time. And the 40x Optical Zoom is fantastic! It takes some great up-close shots without having to get up-close. And transferring to JPEG for still shots is easy with the new software I'm trying, and the stills look great.
And the nightshooting is really cool, too. I just don't know if I'll ever use it other than to torment my cat.
Overall it's a nice little camera, but there is room for improvement.

I wanted something like the standard apple product, which may not be the highest quality but have worked the best for my purposes. These fit the bill on all counts - the sound is absolutely fine for me ... maybe I'm not an audio expert, but I have no complaints. They stay in my ears, have a mic for taking calls, and come in cute colors (though I'd really love it if they came in red -- hint, hint Sony!). I will be sad if these stop being produced. I'm on my 2nd pair of these because I lost my first set, and am very pleased with them.

Sony Hi8 Camcorder 8mm Cassettes 120 Minute (4-Pack) Review

(More customer reviews)I have used other Hi8 tapes but from my expreience nothing beats the quality of a Sony. I am an active member of a muscial band and we perform about every week. I set my camera (Sony TRV340) on a tripod and let it record on all our venues. As a result I consume quite a number of tapes per month. Because of this I need a reliable, high-quality brand that I can trust; the Sony Hi8. Video quality is superior, even after several re-recordings (taping over footage). The same goes for the sound; crisp and clear (especially when you have an auxilary mic). I found the outer tape housing surprisingly strong. At one time I dropped a box of these tapes from a high shelf and on to a hard-tile floor - but they remained intact and safe. These tapes are pretty much versitle in any kind of filming situation, and for that I give Sony praise.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this AC adaptor for my Sony video camcorder after my original adaptor died. The original adaptor lasted five years with minimal use. It was only plugged in when the battery required charging. We never left it plugged in for more than an occasional overnight charge. I estimate that we charged the camera less than three dozen times since it was new - compare this to your typical laptop adaptor usage.
I conducted an extensive search for a replacement AC adaptor after discovering that most vendors wanted more than $50 for this thing. As an electrical engineer who knows what's inside these things (a DC/DC converter, a few discrete components and perhaps an inexpensive logic device or two - none of these are expensive components) I was shocked to discover such high prices for such a commonplace, modern-day accessory. My first (cynical) thought was that Sony wanted to subsidize the price it charges for video camcorders through the sale of these replacement adaptors - this may very well be the case.
I was very pleased to find that Amazon offered a discount off the typical 'retail' price I found elsewhere - too bad it wasn't closer to $20 though. When I received the unit I was pleased to discover that the size and weight of this replacement AC adaptor was significantly reduced from the original unit.

It has a nice firm, solid feel to the latch, easy to change o-ring (comes with a tube of o-ring grease and a spare o-ring). It has a diffuser for the flash (so that it isn't obscurred as one reviewer lamented). The buttons are easy to press and give access to all of the camera's normal features. It fits like a glove because it was purpose built for the camera. I couldn't be happier with it.

However, the tiny plastic grooves that separate the individual metal contacts are about 50% thicker than those of the original Sony battery. As a result, when I slid this knockoff battery into my Sony camera, the plastic grooves "gripped" the contacts inside the camera, and the battery would NOT pop back out. I even tried tapping the camera against a hard surface, but it wouldn't come out. I found a slender tool to pry the battery out. Rather than risk it again, I guess i should just bite the bullet and buy the waaaay overpriced Sony battery.

amazingly good videos. I got this gadget as a replacement for my
old sony, and so far have been very hapy with both the
new functionality and the quality of output.
My only comment is that the software included with the camera is
largely useless. The video produced is in the MP4 format (which is
basically QuickTime on steroids) so you will need to get a decent
MP4 player.
I've downloaded a MP4 player called 'mpegable', which comes as a
standalone application or a plugin for Microsoft Media Player.
It works very well in both configurations.
If you plan on converting video to other formats (such as writing
it to DVD) you will need to invest into a decent converter,
I've used QuickTime Pro with much success.
As a side note, my favorite DVDSource Creator will not work
with MP4's produced by this camera.
The video produced (at highest settings) is:
Size: 640x480
Frame Rate: 29.97 fps
Bitrate: 2734 kb/s
Audio: 2 channels
Sample rate: 24000 Hz
Depth: 16 bit
Bitrate: 123 Kb/sec
On a close inspection of the video, compression artifacts are
visible, but overall the quality is very good. The low light
performance is adequate, keeping in mind that a 3CCD camcorder
it is not. The camera does not have image stabilization, so try
to minimize or otherwise smooth your hand movements.
I had to throw away my old memory sticks and related hardware
(adapters, etc) because this camera takes a new format memory,
called memory stick duo and duo pro. I've purchased half a gig
duo pro from ebuyer which the camera recognized with no problems.
The quality of stills is very good, there are many new menu
options to play with. What stands out immideately is the new
'magnifying glass' mode, and the 'hybrid' mode. The latter allows
you to shoot 'hybrid' video/still combinations. Not sure of how
useful is that.
--- 1 week update:
I had opportunity to take more pictures and video with this
camera. I am still upbeat on the video capabilities, pictures
are not that simple. First off, it is my conclusion that taking
great pictures with this camera is possible, but it requires some
serious tweaking with the menus, reading the manual and
understanding the basics of photografy.
If everything is left in 'auto' mode the pictures will come out
blury, default flash is simply inadequate, every single picture
taken indoors will have red-eye problem. There is also sporadic
'purpling' problem, when the background turns feverish
yellow/purple for no particular reason.
This is what I did to workaround the problem:
1) Switch OFF auto-mode (i.e. keep Program mode ON)
2) Switch OFF multi-spot nonsense back to regular spot focus
3) Switch ON Red Eye reduction function
4) Switch OFF AF illumination
5) Increase flash from normal to flash+
6) Picked 3 megapixel format (this is arbitrary, I have
no use for 5 megapixel pictures)
7) Try to pick a correct ISO (100/200/400) and light balance
by hand before shooting.
8) Try to hold the hand absolutely steady during the shoot
This results in nice, crisp pictures. However, I feel the vendor
should have programed the auto mode so the users don't need to go
through menus/setup all the time. The last thing I needed is to
learn the importance of histogram and shutter speeds.
To conclude, an automatic, forgiving camera it is not. You
will not be able to take pictures at a party (or anywhere else
for that matter) without changing a menu setting or two.
However, understanding the way the camera works and reading the
manual once (or twice) will improve the quality of the pictures.
I would deduct a couple of stars from my original 5 star
assesment, but I don't think Amazon allows you to do so on once
the rating is assigned.

(More customer reviews)After looking at the specs to this new HDR-HC9, I noticed that Sony's HDR-HC7 (last year's model) was almost identical to Sony`s latest in MiniDV technology. I began digging in the specs department for awhile on both Sony's website and here on Amazon. I was able to determine the following differences between the two:- The Sony HDR-HD9 boasts on it's Amazon specs that it has upgraded to a 2.0 USB connector leaving the old 1.1 design behind, however the specs sheet on Sony's homepage seem to dispute this, claiming the HDR-HC9 is still plagued with the old technology. I rarely use any sort of camcorder for still pictures, I do have a 512MB Memory Stick installed in my unit for that "just-in-case" moment we've all been in. Even in the rare occasion I do snap a couple experimental stills while on vacation, I always use a card reader to transfer the pictures to my PC, not the USB interface.
- The supplied software is obviously upgraded. The Sony HDR-HC9 comes with Picture Motion Browser version 2.0.17
- If you really care about stills (and take a lot of them...I mean a lot of them) the Sony HDR-HC9 can now handle an 8GB Memory Stick compared to the HDR-HC7's 4GB.
- The general color of the new HC9 is black (which I prefer over the cheap space-age looking silver of the HC7) but this is just a consumer's preference, no reason to upgrade.
- It has been posted on other websites that the HDR-HC9's manual focus has been improved over the HC7's.I've been trying my best to come up with something more but honestly, this is all I could find. This camcorder is basically the HDR-HC7 with a new paint job and a few minor modifications. Not to say this is a bad camera...far from it. I shoot exclusively with Sony camcorders and this one is by far the best I've ever owned.
If you happen to own the HDR-HC7 don't be swindled into upgrading. As the few minor spec differences above point out, you already own the new HDR-HC9 minus the 8GB Memory Stick storage capacity and the onyx color scheme. Compare the specs for yourself, if you find anything that differs between these two models feel free to list them in the comments section under this review. I searched for 30 minutes and this is the best I could do.
As far as the camera performance itself...what can I say? It's a Sony, top of the line. If you want to shoot quality HD movies but don't want to break your bank account, the Sony HDR-HC9 or HDR-HC7 is probably the right fit for most people's budgets.
I also prefer shooting with this camcorder because of the MiniDV tapes it uses as opposed to all the other media platforms such as DVDs, Hard Drives, Flash Memory...etc.. This format (MiniDV) is an industry standard and if you are planning on editing your videos with computer software (Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas Studio) this is the ONLY way to go.
DVDs and Hard Drive camcorders require a lot of MPEG-2 video compression and when the video itself is transferred to your PC and edited into files the quality of the video is compressed again. Finally, when burning your finished film to DVD the files are degraded once more, leaving the footage pixilated and grotesque...like someone ran it through a garbage disposal. Something to think about.

(More customer reviews)I did not buy my TRV22 from Amazon but from Circuit City due to their great return policy I had originally bought a Canon Zr70mc and within 2 hours I took it back because it needed a tremendous amount of light for indoor filming and even then it was very grainy. So I upgraded to the Sony TRV22 and what a difference, now filming indoors is not a problem the Sony does not need much light usually a table lamp is now plenty and there is very very little if any graininess to the picture. The picture quality for outdoors is fantastic.. Yes in bright light the LCD screen can be hard to see but most LCD's are hard to see in bright light. I don't feel the wind noise is an issue but that's me. As for uploading and downloading the video to computer is a snap... plug the camera into the firewire or USB port and Windows XP will see that it's a Sony camera and configure itself automatically and it's ready to go. I have not tried the still capabilities because I have digital camera. The Nightvision works, its neat to play with but I probably won't use it much. The menus are easy to navigate and the touch screen is a intresting idea but it works pretty good. The camera must have a noise cancellation feature because it does not pickup its own motor noise which is very quiet to begin with. The supplied battery is good for about 80 minutes with the LCD on. I made a short test video and used Nero 6 to burn it to DVD format and everything went smoothly and the quality was just as good as the tape. Overall I am very happy with the Sony TRV22...I hope this review will help somebody who is researching on buying a new camera....

(More customer reviews)I have had a sony Hi-8 Camcorder for ten years now, and was genereally pleased with it. However, I wanted to go digital. I didn't want to spend too much money, certainly not on my first digital venture. I did a lot of online reading, and got the impression that HDD cameras didn't perform too well, and mini DVD limits your time, so went for miniDV.
I have had the camera just over a week at the time of writing.
Pros: Good clear image. Audio Quality. Nightshot Plus. Ilink. Small size. Ease of Use. 40x Optical zoom.
Cons: Sony Accessories, particularly batteries are far too expensive. I shall be looking for 3rd party sources. No headphone jack. No accessory shoe. Cannot control playback except via touch screen LCD. No firewire cable supplied. Cannot charge batteries off camera without purchasing a seperate charger.
Comments.
It comes with some basic editing software on CD, but I cannot comment on this, as I have Adobe Premiere 1.5, and I am using this with no problem at all. If you want to transfer your video into your computer, you need a firewire cable. Usually for a PC you need a 4 pin to 6 pin one. You can buy them on Amazon MUCH cheaper than the local stores, so I recommend ordering one if you decide to buy the camcorder.
All in all, I am pleased with it so far in terms of video and audio quality. One annoyance. If you buy another battery, you also need to buy a charger, as the power supply you get with the camera will only charge the batteries whilst they are in the camera. This isn't much use if, for example, you want to charge a battery at home, while you use a fresh one outdoors. The extra chargers are around $40, as well as the cost of another battery of course. By the time you buy an extra battery, that off-cam charger, a case, a couple of filters, and a firewire cable, you can almost double the cost of the cam itself!

(More customer reviews)I recently purchased this camera and have been very pleased with its performance. When weighing out the decisions of which camera to buy, it can be very confusing. Which format should I choose? Hi-8, Digital, MiniDV? All of these can seem confusing. For the novice cameraman this camera provides a perfect blend of form and function. The LCD screen is large and vibrant and provides for an easy way to see what you're filming without haveing to peer into a viewfinder.
The only drawback of this camera is that the battery life tends to be pretty short-lived. However, you can purchase an extended life battery which comes in handy if you want to record for extended periods of times. One extremly useful feature of this camera is the light, which really works well at night. Also, a really cool feature of this camera is the ability to shoot in complete darkness (via an infared filming capability).
In a nutshell, if you want great quality and extreme affordability this camera is for you.

In a world increasingly dominated by digital, Hi8 offers a refreshingly good format to shoot in. Despite the big press that MiniDV, Digital8, and the new MicroMV have been getting, many people still prefer the tried and true Hi8. Hi8 offers the highest quality outside of digital and is a good choice for everyday shooting. As long as you just want to document your family's life, and send videos to grandma, you aren't really giving anything up.
The CCD-TRV308 is Sony's midrange Hi8 camcorder, and it offers an assortment of features that make it great for the average home videographer. Sporting a 2.5-inch color LCD and 20x optical zoom, there's really no situation that the TRV308 won't shoot well. Especially when you add in the NightShot mode, which switches the camera to an infrared shooting mode, and SteadyShot image stabilization, which helps eliminate those annoying shakes that accompany high zoom levels.
In addition the CCD-TRV308 offers a few fader and picture effects, as well as some titling options.

(More customer reviews)Having previously reviewed the Alpha 200 and 350, it seems a bit silly to review the Alpha 300. After all, the Alpha 300 is a 200 with Live View, or a 350 with 10 megapixels instead of 14mp. Right?
Well, pretty much that's the case. But there is also a corresponding price difference. Is Live View worth an extra $100? Is 14mp worth an extra $200?
For my money, yes, Live View is worth the $100 because of the way Sony has implemented this feature. Unlike most systems, you won't see a loss in autofocusing performance (or a loss of autofocus completely), nor will you alter the way the exposure and white balance are determined. Add to this the articulated screen that makes extremely low or high angle shots easier, and I say "YES"! Any drawbacks? Yes, this screen is a bit thicker, and pushes you back a bit when looking through the camera. Also, the way Sony implements Live View does mean you only see 90 percent of what you'll get on the image.
OK, is 14mp worth the extra $200? I don't know, but I don't think so. We really need more critical comparisons from people with true scientific methods of measuring the difference in image quality, but there are a few assumptions that will probably hold true, based on previous cameras. The 14mp will give a superior image in good lighting, when ISO values (the fake "film" speeds) can be set to higher quality settings. You won't see this difference on an 8x10 standard photo, but probably could in very big enlargements or severe cropping of photos. Keep in mind that the "1.4x and 2x teleconverter" option you have with Live View is nothing more than cropping, with 2x dropping your effective megapixels in half.
Past cameras would suggest, however, that the higher pixel density of the 14mp camera would be a drawback in low light conditions, in particular when we have to raise the ISO settings. Thus, they may not even be as good as the 10mp sensor for these applications (but we still need critical testing to confirm this assumption).
So, for my money, I'd say the 14mp is probably not worth the money for someone shooting an even variety of shoots, but might be for a landscape/wildlife photographer.
Compared to other brands, I think the Alpha 300 wins on features compared to the Canon Digital Rebel XTi or Nikon D60 (Live View, stabalization in body). The new 12mp Canon XSi is more in the price range of the 14mp Alpha 350. In any case, with 3 new Alphas, and the new D60 and XSi, there's no more excuses! Get a camera and start taking great photos!

I chose it because it was a 900 MHz system rather than the 100 MHz systems from Hysonic, etc. The included lapel mike is not very good. Lots of distortion and very cheaply made. I tried a better quality Radio Shack lapel mike, #33-3013 and got much better results. Compared to putting the mike right into the camcorder, the wireless transmitter shows considerably more noise and lower sound level. No noticeable difference in frequency response, at least for voice recording. Dropouts started occuring when I was about 50 feet away. Bottom line is this isn't broadcast quality but certainly adequate for amateur use.

(More customer reviews)Both reviews I've read on this product seem scattered and incoherent, so let me see if I can clear-up some of the misconceptions about Sony's DVD camcorder 101. I've had mine for 6 months now and am getting used to it. Despite what you might hear about the DVD format, this isn't an easy piece of equipment to use. You will have to put some time (translate: hours) into the learning process involved in using the camcorder and the powerful but heavy-on-the-steps PIXELA ImageWriter software that works with the camera.
For me, the camera works great...it does just what the manual says it will do and it does it well. I find the images to be clean and clear, the sound to be excellent, and the buttons and internal program to be logical and understandable. Buy an extra battery and a filter to protect the Zeiss lense-aftermarket products should cost you less than $100 for both and well worth it. I was under the impression that I could just plug my MiniDVD into a drive and burn right away to peripheral DVD drive-just like with Video copying-BUT I was wrong. You have to download everything to your computer hard-drive (and you better have lots of space!), then edit it, then you can make a copy. This process yields a clean product but, yikes, it takes alot of time and effort. Hopefully, some future software package will just automatically cover the many steps necessary to burn a simple DVD. In the meantime, you guessed it, manual keyboard labor!
Now, the Pixela software is another story; It's complicated and confused the heck out of me. It's designed to be universal in format, hence, not words just icons! But, again, once you learn the language of the program you can get it to do what you want, but be prepared to sweat it out and make lots of silly errors before you land in the world of ImageMixer extraordinnaire...
Now, I'm having lots of fun with the camcorder. It's handy and small and the stabilizer works better than I imagined. But, be forewarned that the doggone stuff is complicated to transfer and is best suited for the computer-literate geek!

Then as I started to use it in my Video camera, I was getting error messages and data corruption issues. I did some searching around on the internet and I found that the error is usually do to counterfeit memory cards. So I looked on the page and they gave a great list of things to look for. Biggest giveaway that mine was not really from Sony:
* There was no product information paper on the inside in several languages
* The UPC had MSX-M8GST/X, the valid UPC does not have the "T/X" at the end, and the actual number under the UPC was for a 1GB memory card.
* Obviously the bad performance of the card.
I talked with Amazon, and got the seller to refund my money and I ordered it directly from Amazon. When I looked at the two packages side by side, there was an obvious difference. On the card, the print was very faded (and incorrect) versus the legit card.

(More customer reviews)Short version: This is a great lens... very well made, effective, versatile, and performs impressively. A great investment for anyone wanting a lens that really can 'do it all'.
Long version: I got this lens as an upgrade from my original Sony 18-55 lens, since I wanted a lens with a little more zoom capability (and some close-up as well) without having to switch back and forth between the 18-55 for wide angle and a bulky telephoto for higher zoom.
I was worried a little bit by reviews of the similar Tamron 18-250 lens because some reviewers claimed it had slower focus times and zoom slip.
Well, with this lens, I've not noticed any difference in focusing speed or had any problem with the zoom slipping; the zoom itself is tight and the autofocus is spot-on (I have mediocre eyesight, so AF is pretty important for me). Colors are vibrant, the view is clear... everything is good with this lens so far. I'm very pleased and not at all remorseful about dropping the cash for it.

(More customer reviews)My video "review" isn't really a full review...it's mainly to setup some actual [handheld] footage taken with the webbie. Of course, with the video compression you won't see the actual HD footage, but it should still show up a bit crisper than the footage taken with the JVC GR-D770U in the very beginning of the video.
The footage with the Webbie taken at my desk looks yellowish, but it's because I have a yellow (normal 60 watt incandescent bulb) lamp at my desk. There is no manual white balancing on this camera, but if used with some 5100K fluorescent lights, you'll have a MUCH better picture.
You will NOT get professional features/results on a consumer camera in this price range. Period. Once you understand that, you'll be able to see this camera for what it is.
You WILL see pixelization in low light situations - this is true for ALL low-end consumer cameras. Unless you spend $1000 for an HD camera, you're simply NOT going to be able to film in the dark...especially not without picture degradation.
I rarely use the audio taken from the internal mic, so I can't say much about it. But it does appear to be unidirectional, and will pick up EVERYTHING in the surrounding area...especially wind noise. In quiet situations, you'll also hear the noise from the zoom and/or auto focus (you can really hear it in the section of the video with the cats).
There's no image stabilization, so either use it with a tripod, or don't drink an entire pot of coffee before shooting with it.
FOR THE MONEY, this is a good little camera - it's what I expected the camera to be.

original FA50 battery shows 85 min. Battery is precise. You will know exactly how many minutes left. It will even give you additional 1-2 min. Before it I bought generic "CTA FA70 battery" - big disappointment...that company announced it as an Info Lithium compatible.....not really ...it showed time BUT even full it showed just 145 min (LCD mode) and it used to suddenly stop working at the time when it showed 35 min left. Also camcorder was keep showing message "Use Sony Info-lithium Battery"
Acctulaly, it sad to say but You "don't have a choice" to buy anything beside Sony's FA70.
But with Amazon credit card Welcome $30 discount $40 price seems very reasonable.
Do not save on most important parts.

Sony Cybershot DSC-T100 8MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom and Super Steady Shot (Red) Review

(More customer reviews)The DSC-T100 is a very good camera and I would highly recommend it. I have had several generations of the Cybershot series (DSC-T1, DSC-T9 and now the DSC-T100) and they've all been great, high quality cameras.
This camera takes beautiful pictures. The pictures are clear, little to no white bleeding, with superb colors and great contrast. The lens is bigger than previous models so it works better in low light conditions and apparently this camera uses the noise reduction technology used in the new high end Sony cameras so the pictures should be less noisy when it's dark too.
The movie quality is 640x480 at 30 frames per second with audio. And unlike the previous models you can zoom while recording movies (BIG plus!), whereas in the previous models you were locked at whatever zoom level you set before you began recording. Also, the movies are saved into MPG and not Quicktime so you're not locked into a video format.
The camera is bigger than the previous top-end models, but not by much. I imagine they made the change to fit in the 5x optical zoom (over the previous 3x). And while they had the extra depth they threw in a 3 inch LCD (instead of 2.5) and a larger battery (to drive the larger LCD no doubt). I personally preferred the feel of the DSC-T9, but I accept the trading of features for a bit more size.
The downsides to the camera are few and minor, and if I could I would have given this product a 4.5/5, but they don't let you do that. But, here are the problems I have with this camera.
1. Reduced Buttons: From the previous models they removed buttons and replaced them with software driven menus. While I do not mind software menus, I do mind not having a choice between using the software menus and using physical buttons. They really should have included a button for delete and I really want a switch to pick between movie mode and picture mode. It takes a few extra seconds to switch from the previous models and I don't like that. Companies seem to think that it makes something easier to use if they make it software driven, but really it makes it harder and slower to use.
2. Options Not Very Accessible: The software menus impose too many limitations. I should be able to cycle through all flash options with the flash button in auto mode, but I have to go into program auto mode to do it, and I have to use the software menus to do it. This camera has the ability to set a brighter flash or a dimmer flash, but it takes so long to change that I won't ever be able to use it. The same type of problem applies to the red eye reduction (although, I don't think it's necessary because it doesn't seem to have red eye problems since the flash is further away from the lens).
3. The camera is still missing options that the DSC-T1 had. When I bought my DSC-T9 I remembered being so angry that they changed and removed options, and still they're missing. For example, you can cycle through different display levels (normal, normal with histogram, bright, etc.). On the DSC-T1 there was an option to turn off the backlight, which increased the battery time dramatically. But, you can't do this on the newer DSC-T9 or even the newest DSC-T100 models.
4. It's a Sony so you pay a lot more for it. The camera is a reasonable price, but to make it useful you need to buy a Memory Stick Pro Duo, which costs a considerable amount more than SD cards (even though they are the same technology). You also may want the docking station, which is far overpriced, and all of the various other peripherals are more expensive then this should be also.
Don't let the negatives discourage you though. This is a good product a Sony deserves praise for making it. I just wish they'd consult with me before they marketed it. :)

The pros are clear - very sharp (even wide open), fast AF, great colors and Bokeh (Minolta style), accessories (drop in CP filter). Definitely the best Sony lens - a combination of CZ-type sharpness with Minolta-type colors/Bokeh/feeling. I use it mainly with 1.4xTC and it works as good as without it.
The main con was also clear as soon as I got the lens - it is heavy! I used Minolta 400/4.5 and Minolta 300/2.8 HS (which is supposed to be as heavy as the Sony), but the Sony is much heavier. Even without the tripod collar. I don't have problem with holding the Minoltas, but with the Sony my hands are shaking. Actually I used it today for ~1.5 hours, and now, 3 hours after I am back, my left hand is still shaking. And I don't think I have Parkinson. Not yet...
The other cons are related to the structure of the lens. First time I used it, I took out the tripod collar. But I realized that I am pressing many buttons accidentally. When I tried to used it with the tripod collar (thinking that I can hold it from the collar), it was very uncomfortable and I couldn't have a good hold.
Another problem is the focus ring. It is big and nice to use when you want to use it, but it cannot be covered (like in Minolta lenses) and you can easily move it when you don't want to move it... *** UPDATE ***
I used the lens a little more and I think I finally learned how to hold it. Now I can hold it without shaking. I just ignore my fear to press/move buttons/switches/focus ring and hold it in the most comfortable way for me (the back of the hand on the control panel with all the buttons and the fingers on the focus ring). I just need to remember to check from time to time that I press anything...
****I also don't like the front "cap", which is actually more like a leather carrying case.
And the last complain - there is no dedicated protective filter for the front element (like in Minolta lenses). I heard that the front element is the protective glass, but even if it is true, I cannot replace it by myself. So if I have a scratch on the front element I need to send the lens for service.
Overall, it is a great lens! The image quality is amazing and makes all the cons irrelevant - if you want the best picture, this is the price you have to pay! I believe that most of my complains are because I am not used to the lens yet. I believe that after using it for a while, I will learn how to hold it in a way that my hands wil not shake and my fingers will not press the buttons. At least I want to believe it...

(More customer reviews)I recently purchased a Sony TX7 and wanted to keep my camera in mint condition as long as possible. Even though I already dropped it (completely my fault, I should've known better than to bring it to a concert without the wrist strap) this case keeps the lens from getting lint and dust in the lens.
The back of the case is leather, or a material that seems like leather, and the rest is a polyester-type material. There's a slim pocket in the very front to put one extra battery and a few memory cards if needed. The case is padded on both the front and the back with durable foamy material. It makes the case much thicker than needed, but I assume it'll protect against blunt strikes and minor drops.
The battery does what it needs to do. For TX7 owners, I definitely recommend a second battery unless you don't shoot much. But the battery dies much quicker than others, probably because of the juice needed to record in 1080i.
The tripod is probably the biggest surprise to this package. While most tripods, you need to manually pull out the three legs, this one you just set on a flat surface and gently press down, and the three legs will be pushed out by the center piece. Think of it as how an umbrella works, how the middle piece is connected to the arms and pushes out to fully deploy the umbrella.
The only con to this kit is that the tripod doesn't fully fit inside the side pouch. About 1/3 of it sticks out; the only thing you can do is tighten the band around the top so it grips onto the tripod. I rarely take the tripod out unless it's to a gathering where there's a lot of people.
In conclusion, if you're looking to purchase an extra N battery, it's very well worth the extra $8 to spend on a mini tripod and an excellent carrying case.

Native MTS camcorder format is not supported by many players. It needs to be converted to H.264 usable by BlueRay players ...
I was reading reviews before buying this camcorder, and was just amazed how much ridiculous stuff people were saying. Some have no clue what to do with this (or Canon...) HiDef camcorders! Speaking about this CX100 - there is nothing to be scared about. Nor about Canon's or others Sony, Canon Panasonic's ... all using slightly different flavors/methods of recording AVCHD. Sony happen to mark their movies with MTS extension. I have ~6 years old Pentium 4 2.8HT/2 GB RAM/XFX with NVidia7600GT card/DirectX 9.x. (Window Media Player +Xvid plugin) playback is not perfect, a little choppy but acceptable. Please note, that if you computer preview is smudgy and choppy, this is NOT a CAMERA fault! Same video is played perfectly fine on Blue Ray player when converted to H.264. I also have new unibody 2008 Mac Book pro OS X - laptop detects camera right away and launching iMovie08, offering video transfer. If you have older, non Intel Processor Mac - forget about this camera - and ALL OTHER's AVCHD/H.264 camcorders - most likely they will not be working for you. So, please, do not write negative reviews, do not confuse people, OK?
I do not use Component and AV cables (they still in the box). If you do, you are downgrading HiDef video to patetic Analog quality. I refuse call it a "Standard Definition". HDTV is new STANDARD! And that other thing is, Analog. :) So, I use just a HDTV cable to direct view on HDTV, and USB cable to move files to Harddrive.
This camcorder when connected via USB cable is detected as external drive, not a camera. No big deal to me, even more convenient. I prefer to be able to save original files by Copying them to folder I created on my harddrive. When camera is connected to computer, make sure - do not delete movies from camcorder this way. Movies "List/Previews" still will be displayed in camera LCD preview. Completely delete files in build in memory only using in-camera controls. And format removable MemStick only in camcorder, not in computer. I believe, this is typical to all camcorders.
If you already have HDTV - LCD or Plasma, you can view footage directly from camera connecting via HDTV cable. It is looking really good on my Samsung LCD, as good as any non-studio recorded HD content. But this is only a temporary solution. You'll need to empty memory to take more video's, right? I wanted to get the best video from this camcorder and it is all about conversion of MTS to H.264. There are different solutions for Mac and Windows users. Keep reading.

PC users:
- You can use supplied by Sony PMB Software to burn your original HiDef files to REGULAR, not a Blue Ray DVD-R!!!! This is awesome for someone who already has Blue Ray player anf HDTV! I repeat, they can be burned on regular DVD burner, to normal DVD-R, and then played in the Blue Ray player in full glory, with no quality loss, which can occur in conversions to other formats. I made disk like that, and tried it out - and I can assure you - it is real HD video! No motion blur, no hiccups, all is PERFECT! Looks like BlueRay players have much better hardware to handle HD content. You can AVCHD DVD directly from camera, or from movies you copied to the comp harddrive. For each movie event I create separate folder, and later PMB need to 'analyze' each folder befor disk burn.(By the way, when PMB burning disk, you will see that MTS format is converted to H.264). It is in a Manual too.
- One more way: You can install XVID (free) plugin and you can perfectly play original uncorverted MTS files via Windows Media Player!!!!
- Another way: you can get DIVX 7 Pro for mere $[...] ([...]) and convert to MKV, or DIVX PLUS HD format, which can be easily played on PC and Mac computers. DIVX player is free, is that Pro version, which has converter is not free...
- If you have slightly outdated Core 2 Duo comp - make sure you get more memory (4GB+, and better video card with HD support, like Nvidia 9000 series DDR3 /Direct X 10/Open GL2.x)
- Allegedly Windows 7 should have better HiDef support and most of the codexes... will see.

Mac Users:
- Sony providing PMB software for PC user only. Get over it. But actually, Mac user have even better solution, not free though...
- You can get Mac version of DIVX player also for $[...] and convert MTS to something more user friendly.
- Or, (My choice) you can shell out $[...]+tax for Elgato Turbo.264 HD USB/hardware based encoder/accelerator ([...]), and convert MTS to h.264, then store them on external haddrive
- Quick Time Pro 7 can be used for playing H.264 movies! Again, they can be burned on regular DVD-R for BlueRay players. You also, can connect your Mac via MiniDisplay Port /HDMI adaptopr ([...]) to any HDTV or projector for bigger trill.
- PS: MacConnection catalog now is listing this CX100, so you see - it is OK, it is safe to get Sony HDR CX100! :)

Finally, if you don't have any stinkin' computer, or all what you got is one of those anemic 'netbooks' and you still want Canon, or Sony H.264 camcorder - No problem. At Costco, for $[...] you can get standalone Sony DVDirect MC5 DVD recorder (not a Blue Ray disk recorder, regular DVD's) and connect it by USB cable. You can make AVCHD disks readable by Blue Ray players. Never tried myself, just repeating what Manual says :). Canon also has similar device, but it looks like it is making only analog, not HD DVD's. So, all you will need is: Camcorder/MC5 recorder/Stack of DVD-Rs (which cost on average ~$[...] each)/new BlueRay Player/720p, or 1080p LCD or Plasma HDTV. That's it!
MY OBSERVATIONS and recommendations after first week of playing around.
1. ALWAYS record in highest possible resolution [HD FH].
2. Set color to X.V. COLOR!!! (if you have Sony Blue Ray player/and HDTV supporting that (Sony, Panasonic...) you can have advantage of enhanced colors). But it may be better turn it OFF in really sunny day. Colors might be way saturated (red/blue/yellow) almost fluorescent. And even with x.v.color off - believe me, camera will produce very nice video! And use of x.v. color could be very beneficial for cloudy days, or for dimmer lighting.
3. Make sure that you have image stabilization (STEADYSHOT) tuned ON!
4. ...all other settings I have on Auto. You choose yours.
5. There is bunch of useful presets like Beach, Landscape, Soft Portrait ... I have to check it out yet.
6. Camera is very light, so you'd better hold it steady, or attach it to something. I have small tabletop tripod (~$[...]) and I have it attached to the bottom - it works for me like an extra handle.
7. Even when camera is on a tripod - pan (sweep left/right) as slowly and smoothly as you can. Many people have to learn this, because some report excessive blur - it not worse than much more expensive camcorders. It is YOU - you need to learn how to "drive" your new toy. Eventually, it will come to you, no worries.
8. Get a Polarizer, or UV filter - to see through the glare of glass or water. This is VERY nice thing to have on a bright sunny day!
9. Tripods? I have Slik Compact XL, light and good for travel. Works for me. But much better is Manfrotto 190XDB I saw for $[...] at bestbuy... Very solid built, and smooth panning.
RECIPIE to get best video (This is true for ALL camcorders, and digital cameras):
- Try to get as close as possible to object you are filming. I think, best range is 2 - 20 ft. Next best is 20-50 feet
- Do not shoot in the dusk/dark. Film in well lit conditions. Try to have sun, or source of light behind you, not in front of you (unless you are shooting Hawaiian sunset... :) In low light - this camera is about the same as any other one's, if not better. Do not listen to purists about low light "performance".
- Turn OFF that "Digital Zoom"! 10x of OPTICAL zoom is more than enough for most conditions. Beyond that you will get big quality degradation. Try to apply less zoom as possible. Besides, "digital" zoom is using camera sensor, reducing resolution to get higher zoom. NOT good!
- Less zoom will make a big difference (unless camera on a tripod) for Image Stabilization, it will work better. Try, and you will see how is difficult to hold camera still on far zoom range...
- U can use Wide Angle adapter, I got ~$[...] Sony VCL-0630X through Pricegrabber and it is just... OK. At max zoom, corners will be blurred a bit. You can find better one for $[...] (Sony VCL-HGA07).
CONCLUSION: There are better camcorders over there. I really like new Canon HF S100... But it is around ~900! And this cutie, for under 460 --- it can be beat! And even in a "pocket" size - it is real Hi Definition camcorder, just use it to full capacity! Later on, when I become a PRO cameraman, and have tons of money (3500-4000) - I will definitely go for a Scarlet from RED ([...]). But now -- I'm happy with CX100. When I get decent video's I will post it on [...].
... Phew, I'm tired of typing. Just go and get it.
UPDATE: I just saw Pricegrabber's new super deal - 455 at [...]! That's $[...] less than I paid)

Sony 50mm f/1.4 Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this lens because I needed a "portrait" lens for my K/M 7D when my Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 EX "Pro" lens took a dump on me. The lens hasn't been dropped or anything like that (that I'm aware of) but it suddenly is always out of focus and won't focus at infinity at all ... but that's a problem for the Sigma people, so I digress.
In need of a good "portrait" length lens for my 7D I opted for this Sony 50 f/1.4. I'd had a Maxxum 50 f/1.4 years ago but had gotten rid of it shortly after getting a zoom lens. Big mistake. In any case, because my Sigma lens mentioned above was in need of repair and I had a portrait shoot coming up, I got this lens and I must say it's been a worthwhile investment.
Wide open the lens is tack sharp at point-of-focus. Stopped down between f/2.8 and f/4, doing head and shoulder shots of an average-sized adult the lens provides fantastic portraits ... nice contrast, beautiful color and of course very sharp with beautifully de-focused backgrounds.
I shoot a lot of film with Medium format Mamiyas (RZ67 and 7II) and have very high expectations for image quality. With the purchase of this 50 f/1.4 I realized I've been compromising image quality on my 35mm cameras (film and digital) by using "off brand" lenses like Tokina and Sigma. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that Tokina and Sigma make flat-out junk. Just that I didn't realize that the image quality could be better in my 35mm cameras.
Up to now I'd thought that the sensor in the K/M 7D was just mediocre. And, I'm sure that some would say it still is. But, I'm here to tell you that this 50 f/1.4 proved to me that the problems I've thought were all in the body were in actuality all in the lenses.
I'm in the process of replacing all my off-brand "Pro" lenses with Sony/Minolta and Sony/Zeiss lenses. Today (14Nov07) I purchased a Sony 16mm f/2.8 lens (SAL-16F28) to replace my 17mm Tokina lens. The Tokina lens just doesn't cut it when it comes to image sharpness and resolution. I'm hoping this 16mm will perform on-par with my 50 f/1.4. If it does then the next step is a Sony/Zeiss 85 f/1.4 and eventually a Sony/Minolta 80-200 f/2.8 (to replace my Tokina 80-200 f/2.8 ATX PRO).
I know some people aren't as critical as I may be about image sharpness, resolution and contrast. And for those people I say ... to each his own. But, my experience and expectations are very high and I feel there is no reason to compromise. Spend the extra money and buy the best glass you can ... because it does make a difference.

I bought this one for the A700, using the Sony 2x converter, and despite ambiguous marketing writeups, I took a chance on the three components having FULL interoperability with the autofocus, etc. It met/exceeded all my requirements and they are fully compatible. I'll admit that them all being Sony components helped, and I've had nothing but good luck with all the Sony products I've bought. This lens, with the converter, creates a bit darker setup, but I bought it for airshows and distant scenery shots, and the camera automatically offsets for this. I am looking forward to many years of flexibility and enjoyment.

The video mode is better than a camcorder, no lie. The sound is flawless and you can even adjust sound on the camera. The picture...never blurry or anything. The videos play on my 34" LCD with no fault! I'm totally taking advantage of this feature!
The pictures are almost too amazing for me. The camera is a 7.2 megapixel, but I set my picture quality to 5 megapixel because it takes up less space and the pictures turn out beautiful. The image stabilization works really well. I tested it by waving my camera back and forth in the air and randomly took shots without stopping my camera. The weren't the least bit blurry!
There are a few modes in this camera:
Auto Adjustment (For shooting with preset settings)
High Sensitivity (For Low Lighting)
Soft Snap (Adds soft background, good for taking pics of people.)

Also, you can remove red-eye, crop the photo, and do a bunch of other editing right on the camera!
The lens is without flaw. I don't even need flash on my shots because the lens can take in enough light.
You can play slideshows on your camera WITH MUSIC!
There's so many things I like about this camera, I can't list them all. I love it so much. If you get this camera, you will not have regrets. It's only $230 max and worth the price. I have the pink one, but it comes in pink, silver, white, and black.
Also, it looks bulky in pictures but it is really small. A little thicker than a casio but less length and width.
Also, don't buy a camera that doesn't have a viewfinder. I was outside in the sun today and I couldn't see my screen! I love that this camera has a viewfinder!
The Only Cons:
*The battery takes 4.5 hours to charge (but it lasts a long time on full charge)
*Sony uses memory stick PRO DUO instead of SD cards, but Circuit City has a deal that when you buy this camera, you get a free 1GB card (which is all you need.)
I would reccomend this to anyone...it is really user friendly. Each setting you put it on show a description of what it is. Someone who has never used a digital camera could figure this out with ease!

(More customer reviews)This is a neat boombox. I use it when I am cooking or just relaxing. I have only used it indoors (where it sounds great), but I think it is good (though not the best) for outdoors as well.
I had modest expectations when I purchased this and it has worked very well for me. I use an ipod touch in the docking station at it works great. There is no way to navigate ipod menu's (such as artist, songs, and playlist) on the boombox itself, but I use the touch interface on my ipod and it works fine. Of course, the play, pause, and forward/backward skip buttons on the boombox can be used with the ipod (for example, after you choose your favorite artist, playlist,etc on your ipod unit then you can hit play on the boombox and the song will play).
The cd player works great even with heavily used or slightly scratched cds and also plays cdr or cdrw burnt cds. The radio gets great reception. Although you won't be able to throw a window shattering party with this one, I think it is a good buy for most people.

(More customer reviews)I got this as a Christmas gift and was eager to try it out on my camera. I attached it to the camera and slid my hand in but it did not feel right. The camera was secure but I could not move my fingers to reach the shutter button. If I slid my hand out a bit so I could reach the shutter button the strap was no longer tight. I tried loosening the strap but that did not help, although I could reach the controls it still felt weird and was not tight enough to provide any support while holding the camera and it did not make it feel any more secure. However my dad tried using the camera with the strap and he thought it was fine, I think his hands are meatier than mine so the strap was tighter on him yet his fingers could still reach the controls. The build quality is excellent and they seem to have thought of everything with the tripod mound and ability to use it with the battery grip, but I do not think the fit is right for everyone. My suggestion is to try it first or buy it from a store with a good return policy, Amazon included, so you can return it if it does not work for you.

(More customer reviews)I was searching for a super wide Sony make high speed lens, I was a bit hesitating to purchase fisheye because I knew it distorts and 11~18 is not that fast. I tried 16MM as I had no options and what a pleasant surprise - I am happy to say that with 16 MM I have been handling distortion to my advantage..
It is very effective glass, unbelievable sharp and captures great rendition, very cute size to enjoy, it is now always on my camera, don't feel like changing to earlier (sigma20-40) wide angles.
Filters are integral part of this lens but not much of an attraction in today's world. Wish instead Sony had thought of protecting the outer surface, as it can scratch too easily.
Amazon.com was offering best value, quick in supply; actually nothing to say beyond that I have been buying my stuff since many years from them. May be they needed to increase range in accessories, beyond standard items.

Sony NEXVG10 Full HD Interchangeable Lens Camcorder (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)When I first read about this camera, I couldn't wait to get one. Interchangeable lenses, big sensor, tiny size, HD, 14MP stills and more for 2 grand. It sounded to good to be true, and it was.
I will say that the shot footage looks great, if there's adequate light. But if you shoot something with a busy, repeated texture, moire patterns show up - very annoying. Other Sony camcorders in this price range show a very useful zebra pattern in areas of blown-out whites, Sony decided to omit that in this camera - weird.
Another strange omission is in the still pictures - yes it takes great stills BUT doesn't save them in RAW format, just JPEGs. The lesser cameras in the NEX line save in RAW. Why would Sony do this? It makes no sense. If this thing shot in RAW, Sony would have the hottest camera on the planet.
Controls -you can control most of the functions manually, but you have to go through an array of odd menu functions to do it. I understand that an upcoming firmware update will make this much easier, but for now it's just a pain. Another pain - you have to leave the monitor door open all the time to access the controls - you can turn the monitor off and just look through the viewfinder (thankfully).
Glass - the included 18-200mm lens is very nice - good quality glass with just enough drag on the zoom to keep it smooth-I don't miss a motor zoom at all. I bought the wide-angle 16mm lens-which I also like - and it's a bit better than in low light than the included lens. I probably won't get the 18-55mm lens (it seems kind of redundant). Sony has promised more lenses in the E-mount line. Lens changing is fast and easy.
Mac Users
Sony and Apple - what a sad story that is. You can import footage into Final Cut Pro with Log (Lag?) and Transfer, but you won't like how it looks or performs. There are conversion and "wrapper" utilities out there that work, sorta. You're better off using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 with files from this camera. I prefer FCP, but files from this camera look and work better in Premiere Pro. If you only use FCP, this camera is not for you - until Apple and Sony can settle their differences and FCP is updated. Windows users have more options with Sony's own Vegas program, Avid and others.
Sound-The onboard mic is pretty good, and there is a mini jack for an external microphone (no XLR input) but Sony decided to omit manual level control - only automatic levels for sound. Once again Sony omitted something that its other price-class camcorders have. If you have to use the onboard audio, everything sounds OK-until you hit a quiet spot - then the auto gain pumps up and whatever room noise there is hits you at multi-decibels - which means you'll spend a lot of time in post ducking room noise. If you're serious about sound, you'll have to use an external sound recorder. (Zoom makes some good ones)
Camera Strap Holders - The designers at Sony did not think this through. Really really bad placement. If you have a $2,000 camera in your hands, you have to put a neck strap on it. Sony put the strap holds in a place where your strap will cover the record button AND interfere with the open monitor door. It wouldn't be as big a deal if you didn't have to keep the monitor door open to access the controls. I've tried putting both strap clips on just the front holder-which is a little better, but still a pain. Why didn't Sony put the holders on the bottom of the camera, where they would not interfere with the controls? A mystery.
No memory card is included with this camera. If you order it, you'll need to buy cards so you can actually use the camera. Buy the fastest biggest cards you can afford. Memory is pretty cheap these days, and it's odd that Sony didn't include at least a 1 gig card. Not a big deal, but odd.
This unit has the potential to be a great camera for it's price. The annoying menus, the lack of RAW file storage, the auto-only audio levels, the moire patterns, no zebra pattern and the strap holders keep it average. Sony could fix many of these problems with firmware updates - and perhaps they will. I'll add to this review after the upgrade comes out.
If you buy this camera for planned shoots (like indy films or web videos) and have an external audio recorder-you'll like this camera a lot. You can get beautiful work done on it. The glass and the big sensor can give you some of the best-looking footage possible in a camera in this price range.
If you're a live event shooter - this probably isn't your camera, yet.
Event shooters would love to have a great hybrid video/still camera. No RAW files and the menu access to controls just won't make it for those who dream of the perfect camera.
One of these days, Sony or Cannon or Nikon or Panasonic or somebody will put it all together the right way - and shooters will literally fight with tooth and nail to get their paws on that camera. The rest of the industry will then rush similar products to the market.
C'mon manufacturers! Which of you is willing sell us what we really want?
FIRMWARE UPDATE
All it does is provide auto-focus for Sony Alpha-mount lenses. Nothing more than that. I don't own any of those. Sony did provide a MAC version of the update, which is nice.
FURTHER THOUGHTS (after a month with the camera)
Another problem: the covers over the various ports (power, USB, etc...) are held on with plastic hinges, rather than the rubber "plugs" used on some other Sony camcorders. Not good. I'm really careful with my cameras, but still managed to rip off the one that covers the power supply port. On my older Sony cameras (some are more than 10 years old with heavy usage) this never happened.
This camera also has one of the loudest shutters I've ever heard (when you take a still shot). I've been informed (by rzero21) that it's a true mechanical shutter, so there's no way to turn off the sound. I hope that Sony can fix this in future cameras. Sometimes the photo/video guy doesn't want to be the loudest person in the room.
I really want to love this camera, I've shot many hours on it now, plus taken 100s of stills. For the most part, it all looks great. I've gotten used to the cranky menus (sorta) - but I still don't like them. I use an external sound recorder, but I wish I didn't have to sometimes. If it shot RAW still files and had manual control over the audio, I'd buy another one. If Sony's lesser NEX cameras allowed longer shooting times, I'd buy one of those today. (The NEX 3 and 5 also suffer the loud "shutter" problem.)
There are lots of folks out there writing Sony and asking (pleading, begging) them not to cripple their cameras. So far it hasn't been too effective. I'm guessing that some marketing genius decided that customers would be thrilled to pay more for an intentionally crippled camera.
TO SONY'S MARKETING DEPARTMENT:
Take a look at the NEX VG 10 user groups on Vimeo and other sites, plus take a look at the comments your own site. I know you've sold a lot of these cameras, but I guarantee that you won't be able keep them stocked if you just fix a few of the firmware issues that your customers are asking for. You could have the hottest camera in the world! Isn't that what you want? (Maybe you could release a few more e-mount lenses while you're at it?)

Sony HDR-CX150 16GB High Definition Handycam Camcorder (Red) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this camera on Monday, had fun with it for two days, and then returned it. Although I can't afford it, I then closed my eyes and ordered the HDR-CX550V. I basically went from the bottom of the Sony consumer class to the top in one fell swoop.
Things I liked about the CX150:
* FABULOUS quality in adequate light. The video in 24 Mbps mode is stunning. Search YouTube for examples. Every hair on my cat, dust particles in sunlight, it all shows up with beautiful resolution. It's amazing. Almost Blu-Ray quality. You won't find any consumer-class camcorder with better quality.
* 25x zoom , when used with a tripod, lets you get really close
* "macro" works without any special settings. Just put the lens an inch away and it will focus. Resolves fingerprints.
* Amazingly tiny. With no hard drive or tape drive, the unit is frighteningly small. You can put it and all the cables + charger in a camera case designed for a DSLR + telephoto
* PMB software works, has good basic editing. Used it to grab frames from movies - almost don't need the "still" function if 1990x1080 res is good enough.
* It will take a 32GB memory stick, even though the feature list says they only support 16.
* The touch screen is responsive
* "touch the object" spot focus, spot white balance is cool
* Give it the NP-FV70 battery and it will record for hours and hours
Things I either did not like or features missing (by "missing" I realize that you have to pay more). Don't mistake the length of my 'cons' list as hating the little guy - it's a good camera for what it is designed to be.
* A bit pricey. I think it is worth about $450.00, not the $549.00 list
* No wide-angle. I wish Sony had made the lens go from slightly wide-angle to about 15x, instead of from normal to 25x.
* No external mic input
* No hot shoe - not even the Sony proprietary one
* Zoom motor noise is very audible in quiet settings - don't expect to use this camera to record acoustic orchestral music in concert halls
* The "smooth slow-mo 240 fps" is NOT HD 1080i60 quality. Might be OK at 720, but I found it disappointingly blurry. I'd love to see it have the same capability as the Casio EX-FX1 (not holding breath)
* Not enough buttons - too much reliance on the touch screen. I prefer buttons to scrolling through menus. Sony could fix this by providing more than 6 "my menu" choices.
* Auto focus works good most of the time, but when it gets confused it is horrible. Combine that with no quick focus wheel and it is a recipe for loosing shots
* Picture mode is not available in 24 Mbps HD mode.
* The electronic stabilization does not work. I've grown used to optical stabilization in my DSC-H50 and there is no going back.
* Short of using something like the Black Rapid Straps Fasten-R2 screwed into the tripod shoe, there is no way to attach a neck strap. I almost dropped it several times.
* The plastic housing is sensitive to noise - any little touch while recording will show up as sound in the video.
* No windscreen for the mics. Combine that with no external mic capability and you won't be able to hear anything in windy conditions.
* No remote
* No "night shot" infrared
* Low light performance is what you would expect from a small lens size. All the electronics in the world can't fully compensate for glass area.
Summary: if you want a fairly cheap, tiny camera for shooting GREAT quality vids of vacations, the kids and the pets, this is an excellent choice. Want to do more, and you will need to pay more for a better unit. Just want to help other people avoid my experience of being a bit disappointed and having to trade up.

Sound Quality (4/5) - The sound quality on these is far by good. The bass is very deep, not too deep, but having bass too deep IS a problem (can't hear anything but BOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!). If you wanna hear deep bass, put pressure on these. Feel discomfort from the clip and have a headache for the amount of bass. Congrats! You've become an idiot! Anyway, the volume on these is quite loud, but not quite as loud as Sony's h.ear, but the treble is better. Who says you can have it all (if you've ever heard anyone tell you that you can have it all, please hit their head with a shovel)?
Comfort (5/5) - Now, if you read the packaging (which contains someone who looks a lot like Jennifer Lopez, btw), it states things about comfort. Well, those are in fact all true. These headphones are VERY comfortable, and at times I can't notice they're on. Definite 5 stars in comfort.
Design (3/5) - Ok, design is good and awful. Let me break it down:
Good:
- The cord is long. Why good: This would be good for people using these for computering, studio monitoring, video/music editing, things that NEED a long cord.
- The cord is made with strong plastic. Why good: This would be good for bike or ATV riding. Cords get damaged from being hit with a helmet, or just in the air. This is perfect for that, and other similar rough activities.
- The plug is gold plated. Why good: This would be good for most audiophiles and people (freaks) who detail every little thing in every song. Gold plated plugs also seem to be louder than silver plugs.
- The hook is a spring hook. Why good: For people with elf ears (pointy ears), this will make it easier to fit on.
Bad:
- The hook is a spring hook. Why bad: This is the biggest negative of this headphone. The spring hook, makes the speaker go away from the ear, taking out bass and volume that all those audiophiles (and freaks) just love. Why else is this bad: This also make it leak sound. This is a pain for people listening to loud music, which make a little distraction for people sitting next to you (like a bus, or classroom, or a public place).
Features (5/5) - Yay! A positive! The features on the w.ear are pretty great. Firstly, the interchangeable covers is a nice touch, and there are blue and silver to choose from. The silver sure looks nice next to my SLCT582V, and the blue would look nice on more colored objects (such as a bright colored CD player, Sony's new PSYC players to be specific). As I said, the spring clip is a big positive and a big negative. So yeah, there may be only two features, but these are headphones, you're not getting a thousand features on them.
Portability (5/5) - Ok, pictures mean nothing. Yeah, their "clip design". That's what I like to call advertising. Not all clip designs are slim, but that is what Sony and the picture are making you think. Even though these DO happen to be very slim, fair warning. Anyway, these are very slim. Slimmer than my slim design CD player. So, these are very portable.
Price (4/5) - The price for these are surely not a bargain, but they aren't overpriced. The price is set about just right. Most headphones with these features would be also around the $20 mark.
Who they might be for: These headphones would be for people who aren't TOO picky about audio quality, but still want decent sound from them. People who might be using them for long periods of time, or have small-normal sized ears. Maybe for people using computers, or for studio monitoring of some such (but you will need to buy an adapter). People may want to consider these for durability, for maybe people doing sports, bike/ATV riding, or other rough activities. These may be good for people who are using these in not-so-public places, but still travel a lot, or even for home usage. These would be good for people who like interchangeable covers and style.
In my opinion, these overall deserve 4 stars. They aren't exactly perfect, but they're damn there close.

(More customer reviews)Although the product title says "for DCRVX2100 & HDRFX1", this is an L-series battery that works perfectly in my older DCR-TRV103 Handycam.
And holy cow does it work! The battery that came with the Handycam never managed to last for 60 minutes, especially if I used the LCD. Now I can record all day, literally, with 600+ minutes of juice. The added bulk and weight are minor, especially considering the convenience of the longer run time.
Based on other Amazon battery reviews, it looks like folks have been scammed with no-name batteries substituted for OEM. Not the case with me. Still, maybe folks should base a review on their actual experience with the product instead of X-Files-style paranoid delusions.

(More customer reviews)The case itself is well made. It has enough padding without making the case look bulky. My P200 fits perfect. The external mesh pocket fits a spare battery and a memory stick. The case comes with a long strap that is meant to be attached directly to the camera. I already have the shorter strap that came with the camera attached to it. I thought this longer strap could be attached to the hook so I can wear the camera case on my neck or shoulder. The hook is meant to be attached only to a rucksack or bag, not the long strap. The velcro is secure enough to keep the camera inside if you wanted to hold the camera by the strap. Overall, I would recommend this case. I gave it only 4 stars because I had no use for the long strap.

I wanted the T2 for two reasons: built-in 4GB memory and compact/stylish body. And on both fronts, I am 100% happy. The camera is even smaller than I thought, and has even garnered a few compliments, and even at the highest resolution, I can store a ton of pictures without the need to carry around memory sticks.
I understand that ultra-compacts don't take the best photos and the flash is weak, so it doesn't bother me much. Actually, I am pleasantly surprised with the photos this takes. It's not as nice as my Pentax DSLR, but I don't expect it to be. I wanted this for photos I would otherwise miss because I can't lug my DSLR kit everywhere. The photos are well saturated, if a little soft because of the noise reduction/anti-shake, but when put on a 4x6, the photos look quite nice and crisp. Outdoor shots look great, as do indoor shots in decent lighting--meaning most uses. The flash works good up to about six feet, and as long as ISO is kept low, the photos are pretty good.
The built-in 4GB memory was what sold me and it's fantastic, and mounts on your computer like a flash drive, no hassles. It even has photo software built into the camera, though I can't attest to how well it work because it's PC only and I have a Mac. There is a memory stick slot so you can transfer photos on the camera to a memory stick. The bad news is, you can't set the camera to take photos directly to the memory stick by default. It will only save to the memory stick once the internal memory fills up--which might be a while. This doesn't bother me, though, as that's what I expected and even wanted.
A small complaint is the menu system. It can be hard to find some options, and it's not always obvious which on-screen icons are selectable or not. Once you get used to it, it's not too confusing, but I still prefer good ol' buttons and a standard menu interface (like Canon's or my Pentax).
A big gripe, however, is with the touchscreen and buttons. The touchscreen looks a little soft (low resolution?) for its size, and it isn't as sensitive as I'd like, making menu navigation a bit of a pain. Also, the touchscreen doesn't have a hard protective layer, so you're basically pressing on an LCD, discoloration and all--kind of scary! Then, the playback and scrapbook buttons are too small and almost recessed. I don't have large hands, but I have to use my thumbnail to look at my photos, and on a small camera like this with a big unprotected screen, that can be a bit nerve-wracking.
Overall, this is a great pocket camera for quick snapshots, which is why I bumped it up to four stars.
